About the Kikotan Nation
The Kikotan Nation is dedicated to preserving, researching, and educating others about the history, culture, and ancestral legacy of the Kikotan people, an Indigenous community that lived along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia before the arrival of English settlers in 1607.
Our mission is to provide accurate and engaging educational resources about the Kikotan Nation, Virginia Indigenous history, Native American heritage, genealogy, and the important role the Kikotan people played within the Powhatan Confederacy.
Through historical research, family history projects, publications, presentations, podcasts, and online resources, we help bring awareness to a chapter of Virginia history that is often overlooked.
The Kikotan people were among the Algonquian-speaking tribes of Coastal Virginia and were connected to the rich cultural traditions of the Powhatan world. Their story is an important part of understanding the history of the Chesapeake Bay region and the Indigenous communities who lived there for generations before colonization.
The Kikotan Nation is committed to preserving historical records, sharing Indigenous stories, promoting genealogical research, and educating future generations about the resilience, contributions, and enduring legacy of Virginia's Native peoples.
Our Mission
To educate the public about the history, culture, genealogy, and legacy of the Kikotan Nation while preserving Indigenous knowledge and promoting awareness of Virginia's Native American heritage.
Our Vision
To become a trusted educational resource for those seeking to learn about the Kikotan Nation, Indigenous Virginia history, Native American genealogy, and the cultural heritage of the Chesapeake Bay region.
